Teeth Whitening

Our Process

At KJ Barbers, we offer professional in chair teeth whitening services. We use 18% carbamide peroxide solution (far stronger than at home kits) to achieve between 6-10 shades of whitening in a 1.5 hour session.

What does 6-10 shades look like?

The level of teeth whitening depends on a number of factors (including, genetics, starting teeth colour and the source of staining).

This is why we can't provide a precise statement of how much whitening you will achieve.

Pictured on the left is a teeth shade guide. If your starting shade is 17 (a medium level of staining), 6 shades will result in 11 and 10 shades will result in 7.

After Care

No matter where you get your teeth whitened, maintaining your teeth’s whiteness after whitening treatment requires a mix of good oral hygiene and lifestyle choices. Here are some effective strategies:

1. Brush and floss your teeth at least twice daily using a fluoride toothpaste.

2. Limit Stain-Causing Foods & Drinks. Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, soft drink, tomatoes, and dark berries - particularly in the first week after treatment. If absolutely necessary, rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking acidic or colored foods.

3. Avoid Tobacco. Smoking and chewing tobacco cause persistent yellowing and deep stains, undoing whitening effects.

4. Chew Sugar-Free Gum. Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva production, reducing plaque and preventing stains.

5. Schedule a follow up treatment. Teeth are particularly prone to staining immediately after whitening, a follow up treatment can reduce this staining.

Teeth Whitening Compared

Whitening Toothpastes

Whitening toothpastes typically do not contain enough bleach to provide a true whitening effect. They are only sufficient to remove surface level stains.

Pros:

  • Available at most shops
  • Easy to use

Cons:

  • Typically, only provide a surface whitening effect.

Whitening Strips/ At-home kits

Peroxide bleach can cause serious complications if not applied and used correctly. Because of this, whitening strips and at-home kits typically contain approximately 10% peroxide. To achieve results, multiple applications over days or weeks is required.

Pros:

  • Available at most pharmacies
  • Convenient to use at home.

Cons:

  • Require consistent application over a period of time.

Professional In-Chair Whitening (Our Solution)

We use a 18% peroxide solution supported by UV light to activate the peroxide. This provides deep teeth whitening in around 1.5 hours.

Pros:

  • 1-2 sessions to achieve your desired whitening
  • Cheaper than dentists

Cons:

  • There is some risk of causing teeth sensitivity (although less than dentist solutions)

Dentist "Power Bleaching" Teeth Whitening

Dentists typically use a very powerful bleaching agent (up to 38% peroxide) supported by UV light to activate the bleach. This process typically costs between $500-$1000 depending on the time used and product used.

Pros:

  • Strongest level of bleaching

Cons:

  • High chance of teeth sensitivity/ painful "zingers"
  • Expensive
